Grief & Loss Therapy in Michigan

Grief is the price of having loved and cared. When you lose someone or something that mattered, the world can feel unrecognizable — heavy one moment, numb the next, and strangely ordinary in between. There’s no right way to grieve and no schedule you’re supposed to keep. Wherever you are in it, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Lori Little, MA, offers grief and loss therapy for adults across Michigan — in person in Keego Harbor and online by secure telehealth statewide. This is a gentle, unhurried space to feel what you feel and slowly find your footing again.

Grief isn't only about death

We tend to reserve the word “grief” for losing a loved one, but grief follows any meaningful loss. You may be grieving:

  • The death of a partner, parent, child, friend, or someone who shaped your life
  • The end of a marriage or an important relationship
  • A divorce, estrangement, or a friendship that quietly fell away
  • A miscarriage or pregnancy loss
  • A serious diagnosis — your own or a loved one’s
  • The loss of a job, a role, a home, or a way of life
  • The loss of a pet who was family
  • The future you expected that isn’t going to happen
If your loss isn't on this list, it still counts. Grief is real whenever something you cared about is gone.

How grief can show up

Grief lives in the body and mind as much as the heart, and it rarely moves in a straight line. You might notice:

  • Waves of sadness, longing, or tears that arrive without warning
  • Numbness, or feeling strangely disconnected from everything
  • Trouble sleeping, eating, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Anger, guilt, regret, or “what if” and “if only” loops
  • Anxiety, restlessness, or a sense that you’re not safe
  • Exhaustion, or physical heaviness and aches
  • Relief — which can bring its own guilt
  • Feeling fine one day and leveled the next
All of this is a normal response to loss. Therapy doesn't rush you through it — it helps you carry it.

When grief feels stuck

Lori doesn't take a one-size-fits-all view of recovery.

For many people, grief slowly softens over time. But sometimes it stays sharp, or it gets tangled up with trauma, depression, or anxiety and starts to feel like it’s swallowing everything. It may be time to reach out if, months later, the pain isn’t easing at all, if you’re avoiding everything that reminds you of the loss, if you feel unable to function or move forward, or if you’re wondering whether life is worth continuing. You don’t have to wait until it gets to that point — you can reach out whenever the weight feels like too much to hold on your own.

How therapy helps

Together, you and Lori make room for your grief and, at your pace, help you find a way to carry it that lets you live again. Her work draws on a holistic, whole-person approach — including EMDR, which can be especially helpful when a loss is traumatic or when you’re stuck replaying a death or final moments, alongside EFT and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the anxiety, guilt, and painful thoughts grief often brings.

In therapy, you can expect support with:

  • Feeling your grief without being overwhelmed by it
  • Understanding the guilt, anger, or regret that can come with loss
  • Coping with triggers, anniversaries, and “firsts” without the person
  • Working through traumatic or sudden loss
  • Staying connected to who or what you lost while moving forward
  • Rebuilding a sense of meaning and daily life in your own time
